homespun plaid quilt


This isn't a very good picture, but someone on Stashbusters wanted ways to use up a large amount of homespuns. This one is made from plaids and train fabric. I made it in 2002 when DH and I were doing long-distance dating. We had gone to Gold Country in California for vacation, and I mapped out the quilt shops. Most of the fabrics were bought then, but I also had homespuns in my stash. DH enjoyed looking through the quilt shops. He found the train material that is in the center, found me, and said, "If you don't want to buy this, I do." It has steam engines, and he models 1895.
Christine Meunier has a similar pattern in Easy Traditional Quilts - Stars. The dimensions are a little different than this one, and I added the extra "stuff" in the large triangles and corner squares. The end product looks a lot like the block "Best of all". I also added a row of 6" Sawtooth Stars to both the top and the bottom. It fit his queen waterbed at the time. I'm sorry I don't have a full picture. Hmm, I suppose I could go take it off his side of the bed and take a picture, but there's not enough light tonight. Maybe later, if anyone needs a full shot.

Very cute! I've made a couple Homespun quilts with large stars similar to this - the first pattern I'd seen was by Fons & Porter but like most things there are lots of different versions out there.

Love your homespun quilt...I made one recently but used a totally different pattern-a nine-patch with a four-patch center.

Help with Layout , please

I'm not sure how blogger will put these, but let's call the far left one - A, then b, c, d, as they go down. I could use some help deciding on a layout for these blocks. They are happy blocks with train fabric in the middle, and the border fabric is also trains. There is a border for the bottom, I just couldn't reach it very well. It's a donation quilt for the V&T symposium - a group trying to rebuild the Virgina and Truckee Railroad, but they also are friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum. We go in a couple of weeks, so I need to get this one finished. I can't decide on a layout. If you would leave a comment on which one you like best, I would appreciate it. A Christmas wall hanging

This is the first fusible project I made. It was about 1994, and I didn't know to be concerned about how it turned out. The fused clouds are really heavy, and of course quilting didn't do anything for them as they are so stiff. I hand quilted the upper sky, trying to give definition. It was "birthed" rather that bound, so the edges remain puffy. Even with all that, I love this angel. My DIL's friend fell in love with it, and wanted one so badly, that for the next Christmas I made her one in teals. She loved it. Glacier Star with extension, or 488 geese later. . . .

The top is finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It needs a good pressing, then ?? I don’t know if I want to try to quilt it myself. I keep thinking of quilting designs, but I’m not sure I have the skill to carry them out. I don’t want to mess it up after 488 flying geese! If you look at the picture closely, it looks like the left side is brighter, almost like stained glass. It’s because of where it is placed in the living room, the only place large enough for the picture. Here’s the un-cropped photo. The DGK’s had moved all the furniture to the walls so they could build a fort. Works for me!    Happy Quilting, Becky
