Becky's quilt obsession

We’ve received our next project, and I am having a bit of trouble deciding on colors. I’m enlarging the project enough to make a quilt of valor if it doesn’t morph to something else. Blues: Since I used a lot of shaded blues last time, I’ve picked, according to Joen Wolfrom’s Color Guide, pure blues this time. The bottom, lightest, slightly greyed blue will be a consistent background this time. The bright blue with the grey stars is actually the center of a border print, which I won’t be using. This is about 15+ years old, one of the first fabrics I bought, and have yet to use. Whoever heard of frogs leaping for freedom? I have a great niece who was into frogs, and I thought (wrongly) that she would like this fabric for a pillowcase. NO! Reds: I pulled orange reds this time. This is the first picture I’ve been able to take of this quilt made 9 years ago for my daughter’s wedding. Sorry for the light and windchime in the way, there’s no place inside to take the picture without obstructions. DGD#2 decided she needed to be in the picture. I made this from a picture in one of Joen Wolfrom’s color books. I did contact the original maker, who graciously gave me permission to copy it, but she had no directions. She had actually appliqued the red border on the black background. I diagramed it out and pieced it. It is a king size, about 114” square. There are probably 100 different fabrics in this quilt. I collected for nearly a year before I made it. Fast forward to 2006, DGD#2 is expected. I bought a few more fabrics in red and white, but used a lot of the leftovers of the above. This is still hanging in DGD#2’s bedroom even though she changed to pink Hello Kitty after Christmas. DD says she likes to lie on DGD’s bed and look at this quilt, it reminds her of...

Last Tuesday I drove to Des Moines to attend the AQS -American Quilters Society - show there. I just came home last night. One of the instructors was Joen Wolfrom, and I have always wanted to take a color class from her. My wish was granted. I actually took 2 classes with her, one was on landscapes, and the second was a log cabin class, but much of the class was spent on color theory. I've tried multiple times to put luminosity and luster (light and reflected light) in my quilts, without much success. I think I understand it a bit better now. AQS was very clear that personal pictures of the quilts in the exhibits should NOT be posted on the web. I think it is okay to post these pictures of our class in progress on landscapes. This was the first project. We were learning how to put distance, as well as luminosity, in a landscape. Mine is the middle one in the top row, with the crooked peninsula.
