Design wall Monday 3-18-13 Leftovers

I have been remiss the last two Fridays in  posting about my fellow scrap squad members’ quilts being up on the Quilty Pleasures Blog. Be sure and check these out!
I finished my top for the second Scrap Squad project – all but the final border – but had so many left over pieces from trying different looks that, last week, I gradually put them together.I don’t know how I calculated, but I had enough components to make 4 additional stars out of triangle in a square units, which I made up with some left-over centers. I then had an additional 40 triangles left-over. I had cut them with the Accuquilt cutter, and was less than satisfied in how they turned out. I lined up the straight-grain as suggested, but must have had a lot of stretch, as I never could find a seam allowance that would give me a 3-1/2” unit with the star points long enough. I decided to cut 80 additional star points using the Recs part of my Tri-Recs rulers. They fit together fine, and I had better results.
I had to cut corner squares, so used left-over strips and fabric sitting in the big pile on the cutting table. There are also lots of other blocks from the left-overs. I only had a few 4 patches left, those are what you see on the bottom right and left. I don’t know if they will make it into a quilt in their present form.

Design wall Monday 3/4/2013

I've been working on my Scrap Squad project almost exclusively.QM_scrap-squadB
I didn't realize when I signed up for this how frustrating it was going to be to not let other bloggers see the work in progress. I know that many of you were eager to see each step of my Glacier star. It’s nice to write the whole story for the Quilty Pleasures blog, but not the same as weekly updates. The link I just left is for Anne’s Majestic Garden to see what she did with the double X blocks. It is neat to see what everyone does with the project.
I thank those of you who left advice on alternate blocks last week. I ended up using 2 of them. I couldn’t resist making a few stars for the project, so the star ones ended up in the outside rows, similar to border blocks. I also used up some components I made and didn’t use in the main blocks to brighten up that center which had been too dark. These are now in the top. I have two more rows of blocks to put together, then on to borders this week.

I do love those swirls. This will be a bit darker quilt than I usually make, but I love it – oh, maybe I’ll keep this one for me. Fat chance with all the red, white and black lovers in this family.
Happy Quilting,
